2010 Youth Leadership Forum PDF Print E-mail

Over 60 high school students from throughout the greater Omaha metro area gathered together in early February for the 2010 Youth Leadership Forum. This free forum was designed to help students learn that through leadership, they can change their lives, communities and the future. Created by the Youth Leadership Omaha Ambassadors, the weekend event was held at Creighton University's Harper Center and was sponsored by the AIM Institute and Creighton University. The Stinson Foundation sponsored a portion of the event.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in fun, leadership-building activities providing education about college, health, information technology, money and the environment. Lamarr Womble provided the luncheon keynote presentation about finding what you love to do and doing it well. The evening concluded with a presentation by R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2 - a local theatre group that depicted the consequences of bullying and the empowerment of the bystander to report bullying behaviors - and a dance with a DJ.

The event was coordinated by members of the Youth Leadership Omaha Ambassadors, who are 11th- and 12th-grade graduates of Youth Leadership Omaha, and the Pottawattamie Youth Council. The students were empowered to select the breakout session topics and the keynote speaker, and they actively recruited other students to attend. The day of the forum, the ambassadors facilitated ice-breaker activities and served as event moderators. The program impacted its participants by providing a venue to envision a successful future, according to the program manager.

"It let them explore the different areas they have interest in and let them find their true passions and talents," said Jean Munger, the AIM Institute's Organizational Development Manager who oversees the program.
