CBC Students Reap Major Scholarships PDF Print E-mail

As this year's scholarship recipients are showcased in area newspapers, nine recent graduates from Papillion-La Vista Public Schools deserve special recognition.

Brett, Emilia, Tai, Shasta, John, Sam, Ann, Shannon, and Frank participated in the College Bound Club (CBC) Program throughout their high school years. Through the support of the CBC Program, they planned and prepared for college and ultimately beat the odds, earning scholarships totaling more than $200,000 with firm plans for college this fall.

The following is a sampling of the scholarships received by the students:  Goodrich Scholarship – Susan T. Buffett Foundation Scholarship – Creighton University Scholarship – Gates Millennium Scholarship – Dell Scholars.

Students in the CBC Program are offered daily guidance and instruction geared toward college preparation, designed to help them not only succeed in high school but to visualize a bright future beyond graduation. CBC programs are geared towards students who have shown the potential to improve their school performance and become the first in their families to attend college.

The CBC Program is managed by the AIM Institute through grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education's Upward Bound program. Read more about the impact of the CBC Program in AIM's latest research study.

“Successfully completing high school is not an easy thing, but here I am today finishing my last couple of days with my goals fulfilled,” said Emilia Chavez. “I cannot imagine how I would have gone through high school without the help from CBC.”

“I am ready to pursue higher education, attending a college of my choice…The College Bound Club program kept me on top of things and even got me started early on things,” said Tai Hoang.  “I can’t find the exact words to say how much CBC has helped and impacted me.”

A combination of hard work, motivation and great attitudes helped the students earn such strong scholarships, says Jennifer Kessler Stutte, AIM's CBC grant manager.

Stutte also credits the CBC site coordinators, Pam Linke at Papillion-La Vista and Angela Higgs at Papillion-La Vista South, for providing the students great support. "The CBC Program is all about giving back to the community — focusing on the leaders of tomorrow," Stutte says.

Seven of the nine students will attend schools in Nebraska:  University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska - Lincoln and Creighton University.  The following chart identifies the postsecondary plans of the Papillion-La Vista CBC students and the scholarships they earned.
