My Space is Your Space Community Camp
Twenty-two Bryan Middle School students learned about nonprofit careers, college and community volunteerism at
camp this past summer. The students spent a whirl-wind week in July researching and visiting nonprofit
organizations, touring the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus, and performing volunteer work. The camp was organized by Bryan's TRIO Talent Search program.

The World of Philanthropy
At this year's summer camp, students learned about philanthropy and what sets nonprofit organizations apart from others. Speakers from the Student Learning Academy at the University of Nebraska at Omaha told them about college coursework and campus activities that could prepare them for careers in philanthropy. During their trip to UNO, the campers viewed the Planetarium show and visited the Scott Conference Center for lunch.

Careers at Nonprofit Organizations
The Bryan students learned that the careers in the nonprofit world are diverse by visiting several local organizations including a nonprofit film theater. They discussed the academics that they need to be working on in middle school and high school to prepare themselves for the various careers, such as language skills to become a script writer and technology classes to prepare for film editing or special effects.

Volunteering
The campers spent a day helping spruce up Santa's Children's
Christmas Village in Macedonia, Iowa. This facility supports children in crisis and aids in their recovery, especially those with a life-threatening illness or a chronic medical condition and those in distress because of acute poverty or homelessness. The students cleared brush
and cleaned up some of the village buildings.
