Wilson Jr. High Career Fair PDF Print E-mail

Wilson Jr. High held its Talent Search Career Fair for eighth grade students in May 2008.

Nearly 300 students prepared for the career fair by taking career-interest inventories and identifying their top three career choices. Representatives from area colleges attended. In addition, professionals were there to address salary potential, job requirements and training in each of their respective fields.

The Talent Search Career Fair was funded through a TRiO Grant, awarded to the AIM Institute by the U.S. Department of Education. It is the first TRiO Grant to be given in the Council Bluffs School District. As part of the grant’s initiative, 600 students are given the opportunity to participate in after-school, during-school and summer programs that encourage college and career planning.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for middle school students to begin planning for their futures. It gives them a chance to talk to experts and learn first-hand what it is like to be a teacher, nurse, electrician, etc.,” said Nadine Baker, AIM’s Talent Search Grant Manager. “The students find out if they really like the professions they’ve chosen or if there are other career fields that may be more attractive to them. Whatever happens, they realize that education and staying in school is important.”

Forty-five professionals, both self-employed and representing organizations, participated at the Career Fair.
