Wilson Middle School Talent Search PDF Print E-mail

After-School Programs

Art Club – Students will learn about careers in Architecture, Photography, Fine Arts (watercolors and oils) and Fashion Design. They will create works of art using oil, watercolor and acrylic mediums. Students will also take a field trip to the Hot Shops (a working museum in downtown Omaha) and the Joslyn Art Museum.

College/Career Focus: Architecture, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Photography
 

  

Playing With Paper – Students will create their own family trees and talk to a genealogist and web developer. They will also make their own jewelry, scrapbook and decoupage to keep and share with friends and family. Field trip to Hot Shops.

College/Career Focus: Fine Arts, Genealogy


 

Outdoor Adventure – Students will follow the “Leave no Trace” curriculum and learn survival skills, participate in a service learning project through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), take field trips to Iowa State University's Horticulture Department, and Schram Park and the DNR.

College/Career Focus: Environmental Science, Natural History, Science

 

 


Solar Car Club
– Students will learn the fundamentals of physics and math by creating their own solar cars. This year students will also build a race track which will be used for years to come. At the end of the club year, in the spring, the students will race their cars to win prizes. View Pictures of the 2008 Solar Car Competition...

College/Career Focus: Physics, Science, Engineering, Environmental Science

 


Evening Program for Students and Parents

Pizza and Pages – Parents and students attend weekly evening sessions to discuss selected books that they have read together. A pizza dinner is provided. The project is based on the Literacy Circle model.

Career/College Focus: Literature, Writing

 

One-Day Events

Celebrate Creativity – At this one day event, 75 students will attend a workshop at the Joslyn Art Museum that will focus on hands-on activities in music, visual art, theater, opera, dance, photography, martial arts and will include a tour of the Joslyn.

Career/College Focus: Music, Fine Arts, Drama, Dance, Photography



Taking the Road Less Traveled, Conference for Girls – Thirty girls will attend a one-day conference in Ames, Iowa at the Iowa State University in the fall of 2008 and the spring of 2009. The conference will focus on non-traditional career fields for girls.

Other Programs

TeamMates - The Talent Search program sponsors and supports a portion of the TeamMates mentoring program at Wilson. More than 40 mentors were paired with Wilson students during the 2007-08 school year and plans are in place to expand the program district-wide.

Good Morning Wilson - An incentive program for students who have attendance issues.

Kids Helping Kids – Seventh-grade Wilson students are selected to attend a spring leadership camp to prepare them for fall activities such as:

  • Tutoring students who are falling behind academically
  • Baby sitting for teacher’s children at parent/teacher conferences
  • Greeting and conducting tours for visitors to the school
  • Setting up tables/chairs and hanging signs for the Career Fair
