Nebraska WorkForce Index for First Quarter Shows
Mixed Signals for Labor Market
OMAHA, Neb., May. 7 – The Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI), which compares labor availability to job availability in Nebraska, rose to 1.83 in the first quarter of 2010, a significant shift caused by a 24% increase in the number of unemployed workers at the start of the year. While the state’s unemployment rate jumped from 4.4% to 5.4%, the number of job postings increased by 10% over that same time period.
AIM’s job trend data indicates that the number of job postings for the first quarter increased across all but four sectors — Human Services; Government and Public Administration; Marketing Sales and Service; and Finance and Insurance — but the change was negligible (less than 1%). The sectors with the largest percentage gain were Architecture and Construction (41%), Manufacturing (28%), Education and Training (17%) and Hospitality and Tourism (16%).
About the Nebraska WorkForce Index
The AIM Institute and Creighton University College of Business produce the Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI) each quarter to reveal shifts in job availability versus labor availability. The WFI combines the AIM Institute’s employer data with unemployment data from the state’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Index values greater than 1.0 indicate there are more job seekers than available jobs, while values less than 1.0 suggest a labor shortage.
