FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 6, 2009 Nebraska WorkForce Index for Third Quarter Suggests Slight Improvement OMAHA, Neb., Nov. 6 – The Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI), which compares labor availability to job availability in Nebraska, dropped to 1.72 in the third quarter of 2009, a significant shift from the second quarter’s 1.96 posting. The change from the prior quarter indicates that, while there are still more job seekers than available jobs, the gap has closed slightly. This comes as a result of job postings increasing nearly 13% in the third quarter, while the unemployment rate remained relatively level. AIM’s job trend data indicates that the number of job postings for the third quarter increased considerably across all sectors. Manufacturing has halted its four-quarter decline. Government Services, which saw a decline last quarter, has shown the greatest relative increase in postings. Health Science, which declined dramatically in the first and second quarters, is showing a slow increase. Information Technology, whose decline has been slowing for three quarters, posted a dramatic rebound. Jobs in the Business and Administration sector accounted for 25% of the new postings, followed by Information Technology (10%), Human Services (9%), and Finance and Insurance (8%). “The WFI Index results for this quarter suggest that Nebraska’s economy may be picking up,” remarked Dr. Kandace R. Miller, President and CEO of the AIM Institute. She added, “We’re starting to see the number of job postings rise again after a year of steady decline. We hope this means good news for the unemployed and underemployed individuals in our state.” About the Nebraska WorkForce Index The AIM Institute and Creighton University College of Business produce the Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI) each quarter to reveal shifts in job availability versus labor availability. The WFI combines the AIM Institute’s employer data with unemployment data from the state’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. In order to insure a representative sample, the same businesses are maintained in AIM’s database for the full time period. Index values greater than 1.0 indicate there are more job seekers than available jobs, while values less than 1.0 suggest a labor shortage.
