In the third quarter of 2009, the Nebraska WFI improved to 1.72, a significant shift from the second quarter’s 1.96 posting. This came as a result of the number of job postings increasing nearly 13% in the third quarter, while the unemployment rate remained relatively level.

The number of job postings for the third quarter increased across all career fields. Manufacturing halted its four-quarter decline. Government Services, which saw a decline last quarter, showed the greatest relative increase in postings. Health Science, which declined dramatically in the first and second quarters, showed a slow increase. Information Technology, whose decline has been slowing for three quarters, posted a dramatic rebound. Jobs in Business and Administration accounted for 25% of the new postings, followed by Information Technology (10%), Human Services (9%), and Finance and Insurance (8%).

The following industries saw job postings increase the most from Second Quarter:

  • Government and Public Administration: +47.1%
  • Law and Public Safety: +37.4%
  • Human Services: +25.0%
  • Information Technology: +21.8%
  • Education and Training: +19.6%


The following industries saw job postings increase the least from Second Quarter:

  • Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources: +6.5%
  • Marketing Sales and Service: +6.1%
  • Hospitality and Tourism: +4.9%
  • Scientific Research / Engineering: +3.5%
  • Health Science: +3.1%
