Emerging Technology Potpourri
Emerging Technology: During this presentation,
the very latest, cutting-edge technologies are introduced. Topics
such as national wireless internet, erasable textbooks, smartpaper,
biotechnology, nanotechnology, and RFID are discussed along with emerging trends in computer technology (1 hour)
eCommerce and Internet
Introduction to Selling on eBay: An overview of the auction process is described, and features of eBay are highlighted, including seller tools, item searches, listing tips, live auctions, payment and shipping. Selling on eBay: This all-day
session focuses on the selling aspects of eBay. After
learning the basics of how to create a textual description in the
morning, participants actually list their item during the
afternoon. Each participant will create a description, use a digital
camera to photograph the item, and post the auction to eBay.

The Wonders of Google:
Google has grown from a web search engine into a multi-faceted website
that features online tools linked to massive databases of
information. Come and learn about the free tools that Google has
to offer! (1.5 hours)
Joomla Open-Source Website Design: Joomla is a
free, open-source Content Management System (CMS) that will help you
build powerful websites. It is used for everything from creating simple
websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla is easy to install,
simple to manage, and is extremely reliable. In this session, we will
demonstrate how to download the Joomla software, install, implement,
and configure it in the first 10 minutes. The remainder
of the session will be spent showing how to add functionality by
installing templates, components and modules. (1.5 hours)
Web 2.0: Today's Internet: The internet is very different
now than it was two years ago. Innovative technology companies are
making the internet a much more interactive place by publishing free
applications, services, and information. Learn how to fully participate
in today's Web 2.0 interactive community. (1 hour)
Computers and Networks
Introduction to Computer Hardware: A very basic
overview of the history of computers.
This presentation explains how digital messages are sent in binary code
and interpreted by the components of a computer. (1.5
hours)
Introduction to Networking: This presentation is
a very basic introduction to computer networks. Physical
topology, network components, cabling, routers and switches are
discussed as well as an animated demonstration of how messages are able
to find their destination on the internet. (45 minutes)
Home Network Security: This presentation
discusses network security needs specific to the home and educational
environments. Participants will identify typical areas of
weakness in their network, as well as outline methods to prevent,
detect, and respond to attacks. Backup methods for data are
discussed as well as tools that are available to everyday users and
network administrators. (1.5 hours)
Mac or Windows: Which Should I Buy?*: Apple's Mac operating
system is gaining popularity and market share due to its robust
security and easy-to-use interface. This session introduces non-Mac
users to the Mac OS and covers how to easily run Windows on your Mac.
Hardware and software for both platforms will be demonstrated and
contrasted. (2 hours)
Gadgets and Media
Fully Loaded iPod: This
cutting-edge presentation discusses everything your iPod can do BESIDES
play music. Come and learn all of the great hardware extensions that
can turn you iPod into a portable Tivo, alarm clock, backup hard drive,
PDA, or voice recorder. New software applications, games, exercise
sites, and trivia packs for both Mac and Windows will also be
demonstrated to extend your iPod's functionality far beyond the scope
of a music player. (1.5 hours)
Analog to Digital Conversion: This presentation
discusses the progression of media storage from vinyl, cassette and
8-track through today's digital media. The terms "analog" and "digital"
are contrasted and recommendations are given for converting from one
medium to the other. The use of a digital bridge is demonstrated as one
method of digitizing your vintage video and audio recordings. Learn how
to convert your analog treasures into digital keepsakes before it's too
late! (1.5 hours)
Cool, Must-have Gadgets: Come and learn about the
latest gadgets available in todays technology-rich environment.
In addition to discussing whats currently available, learn where to
look to find whats just appearing on the horizon as well.
Digital cameras, recording devices, phones, wireless, memory storage,
entertainment devices, and security are all included in this fast-paced
geek session. (1.5 hours)
Smartphones: What Are They? Cell phones have become much
more than mere talking devices. Now they take pictures, instant
message, download news reports, check email and even stream TV shows.
Find out how these phones work and what functionality you need (and
don't need) in your cell phone. (1 hour)
Digital Photography: Cameras that use 35mm film are now a
mere memory. This session begins by describing the very best features to look for when purchasing a digital camera. We will also discuss how to take great digital pictures by adjusting your camera's settings, how to choose a photofinishing service, and how to upload your photos to free websites to share with friends and
family. (1.5 hours)
Schools and Technology
The Future of IT in Schools: This futuristic
presentation discusses how information technology affects the
instructional process and why schools have such a difficult time
keeping ahead of the wave. Startling predictions are made about
what a typical school will look like by the year 2015. A list of
hot technologies and how theyre currently used in schools is
presented. (1 hour)
Podcasting: Learn about the latest craze to
sweep the world podcasting. What is it, and how can it be used to
extend your classroom to absent students, alumni, and parents?
Learn about how to cheaply record your own podcasts and get them loaded
to your school's web server or post free on podcast servers.

How to Open a Cisco Academy at Your School: This
presentation is designed to familiarize your school staff with the
benefits of teaching the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum at your
school. Students learn how to build computers, install operating
systems, and troubleshoot when problems arise. Learn how Cisco courses
