3 Steps to Conquering the Cloud
Lost in all of the hype surrounding cloud computing? You are not alone. Sure, your company wants to realize cloud computing's benefits - operational efficiency, reduced costs, application flexibility - but you're probably worried about the problems and costs associated with the transition. Some of us still don't understand what the cloud even is. Recognizing a need for education as we all migrate to the cloud, the AIM Institute has organized an informal three-step educational program beginning March 9 and culminating at the Infotec conference on April 13-14.
Step 1: Attend the next AIM Members Forum "Cloud Computing, the Next IT Revolution," presented by Ken Koehn of Seraph Corporation. On March 9 at UNO's Thompson Alumni Center, Koehn will provide a clear understanding of why cloud computing changes everything and its impact on business and IT. More
Step 2: Enjoy a morning snack while you attend AIM's next Technology Breakfast Seminar on March 26 at Gallup's Riverfront Campus. There a cloud computing expert will discuss this revolutionary new technology during "Cloud Computing & the Impact on the Future of IT." More
Step 3: Register for Infotec and the AIM Technology Celebration Banquet to hear noted cloud experts Nicholas Carr, author of The Big Switch, and Michael T. Jones, Google CTA, in addition to experts gathered from all over the country. Plan to restructure your organization's IT strategy after participating in the conference track "Development and the Cloud." More

| Infotec Highlights: Healthcare IT and IT Talent Pipeline |
The Midwest’s premier business technology conference – Infotec – features four nationally-recognized keynote speakers and nearly 100 track presenters from across the country. With the conference only weeks away, we turn our attention to two more of the tracks and sessions designed to provide attendees with skills that can be implemented as a part of a comprehensive business technology strategy. Visit infotec.org for more information about all of this year’s offerings.
In this track, national, state and local officials from leading health systems, HIEs and government organizations will discuss the implications of federal funding and public policy on new healthcare technologies and initiatives. Sponsored by Windstream Communications, the following presenters, and so many more, will be speaking:
| Dave Garets, president and CEO, HIMSS Analytics, Chicago. Garets, whose company surveys every non-federal hospital located in the United States each year, recently poured over interviews with 5,200 health system CIOs and other IT business executives. What did he learn? Garets learned where the healthcare IT industry is heading, how far hospitals have come in implemeting electronic records and how prevalent CPOE administration implementations really are, for examples. |
 |
| Also scheduled are presentations from industry experts including Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy and Bill Beighe, CIO, Santa Cruz Health Exchange and Physicians Medical Group. |
|
Attracting and retaining high-caliber IT employees is an investment in your human capital and, ultimately, your business. This track will help you learn more about the key economic and human resources factors affecting the IT industry. These sessions, and many more, are planned:

| Final Technology Breakfast Seminar set; nearly 100 attend "Mobile Application" event |
Area business leaders were served an update of the mobile computing movement while attending AIM's Technology Breakfast Seminar "Mobile Application Development Trends & the Business Community" on February 26 at the Gallup Riverfront Campus. Led by Matt Galligan, CEO and Co-founder of SimpleGeo, a provider of ready-to-use solutions for enabling location applications, attendees were provided an overview of mobile computing trends and questions facing developers as more and more people migrate toward mobile phone applications to interact with the world around them. A Q&A session concluded the morning.
"This was great," said Christian Burke, a web editor at Creighton University who was in the audience. "We've been talking about the evolution of how our students will use technology in the future and this echoed our sentiments while providing some direction to move forward with."
The next Technology Breakfast, "Cloud Computing & the Impact on The Future of IT," is scheduled for March 26. A cloud computing industry expert will discuss how cloud computing promises to revolutionize how applications and services are delivered to and drawn down by businesses of all shapes and sizes.

"How can you get involved with the mobile world? The low-hanging fruit is to build a mobile version of your web site."
- Matt Galligan

| Bryan Eighth Graders Learn About Careers |
|
Nearly 400 Omaha Public School eighth grade students at Bryan Middle School recently attended a Career Clusters workshop to learn how to research occupations through Careerlink.com, a service of the AIM Institute. Organized by the school’s guidance department, teaching staff and assisted by education staff from the AIM Institute, Bryan Middle students used these sessions to prepare for high school class registration and beyond.
“We want our students to get ready for high school, post-secondary opportunities and beyond. The Career Cluster activity guides students through career activities to formulate and identify realistic career goals and lays a foundation for knowledge about future workforce outlooks,” said Mildred Lemon, guidance counselor, BryanMiddle School Middle.
The annual sessions were organized by Bryan's guidance counselors to help students see the relationship between career preparation and high school coursework. AIM made this opportunity possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's TRiO Talent Search program. AIM supports educational programs such as this to empower students to further their education by encouraging an early interest in career exploration, which will ultimately help to build a stronger workforce. | Fourth Quarter WorkForce Index Shows Improving Labor Market |
The Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI), which compares labor availability to job availability in Nebraska, improved to 1.64 in the fourth quarter of 2009, a shift less substantial than the previous quarter, but still in the right direction. The change from the prior quarter indicates that, while there are still more job seekers than available jobs, the gap continues to close. Unemployment fell from 4.9% to 4.7% in the fourth quarter, and the number of job postings declined 4.4%. AIM’s job trend data indicates that the number of job postings for the fourth quarter decreased across all but two sectors. The AIM Institute and Creighton University College of Business produce the Nebraska WorkForce Index (WFI) each quarter to reveal shifts in job availability versus labor availability. More
